Meili Snow Mountain
Meili Snow Mountain belongs to the Hengduan range and lies where Deqin County in Yunnan's Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture meets Zayü County in Tibet, within the Three Parallel Rivers region of the Jinsha, Lancang (Mekong) and Nu (Salween). Known in Tibetan as Minlinggangri, it is traditionally counted as thirteen snow peaks, the Taizi Thirteen Peaks, whose highest summit Kawagebo rises to 6,740 m, the highest point in Yunnan. Tibetan scriptures venerate the peaks as deities meditating in a prince's palace, and Kawagebo is honoured as foremost among the eight great sacred mountains of the Tibetan world, drawing pilgrims on the kora. The name Meili was first used by the French traveller Major Davies in 1908. A Sino-Japanese expedition was destroyed by an avalanche on Kawagebo in 1991, and Deqin banned climbing the peak in 2001. The Mingyong Glacier and the golden light of dawn are its best-known sights.
