About this place

Mount Kailash (Gang Rinpoche) rises to 6,638 m in the Gangdise range of Ngari, western Tibet, its black rock streaked with snow and its four faces aligned almost exactly to the cardinal points. To Hindus it is the abode of Shiva and the earthly form of Mount Meru, the axis of the world; Buddhists know it as the home of Demchok; Jains venerate it as Ashtapada, where their first tirthankara attained liberation; and for the Bön tradition it is the seat of the sky goddess Sipaimen. For all four faiths it is among the most sacred places on Earth, and pilgrims circle it on the 52 km kora, crossing the Dolma La pass at 5,636 m. Its four faces are said to feed the four great rivers of Asia — the Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra and Karnali — while the turquoise Lake Manasarovar and the darker Rakshastal lie at its southern foot. Kailash has never been climbed: Reinhold Messner was refused permission in the 1980s, and today the Chinese government forbids ascents out of respect for the mountain's sanctity.
