About this place
Mount Taranaki, also known as Mount Egmont, is a dormant stratovolcano on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island, rising to 2,518 m in the Taranaki region. Its almost perfectly symmetrical cone, often said to rival Mount Fuji's, is encircled by a near-circular boundary of native forest that marks Egmont National Park, established in 1900 as the country's second national park. The mountain is a sacred place in Māori tradition and features in the legend of Taranaki's rivalry with Tongariro. It last erupted in the mid-18th century and is regarded as dormant but still potentially active and closely monitored. In 2025 New Zealand law recognised Taranaki Maunga as a legal person, Te Kāhui Tupua.
