About this place

Mount Damavand (Persian: Damāvand) rises to 5,610 m in the Alborz mountains of northern Iran, in the Larijan District of Amol County, Mazandaran Province — the highest point in Iran and the highest volcano in Asia. It is a dormant stratovolcano of trachyandesite lavas whose last eruption occurred in the Holocene, roughly seven thousand years ago, yet the mountain is not dead: sulphur-crusted fumaroles still vent steam around its 400 m-wide summit crater, and hot mineral springs feed the spa villages of the Larijan valley below. Its near-perfect cone carries permanent snow and, on clear days, can be seen from Tehran about 66 km to the southwest. In Persian tradition Damavand is the mountain where the hero Fereydun bound the serpent-shouldered tyrant Zahhak, a tale told in the Shahnameh; for centuries it has stood as a symbol of Iranian endurance. The summit route from the Polour base camp at 2,210 m is non-technical, drawing thousands of climbers each year, and the slopes above Lar National Park hold a small ski area.
