About this place

Mount Vesuvius rises to 1,281 m on the Bay of Naples in Campania, southern Italy, and is the only active volcano on the European mainland. Its summit cone — the Gran Cono — grew inside the caldera of an older, larger volcano whose surviving northern rim, Monte Somma, still walls it in; the whole massif lies within Vesuvius National Park, ringed by vineyards that thrive on its volcanic soil. The mountain's place in history was fixed in AD 79, when a Plinian eruption buried Pompeii, Herculaneum, Stabiae and Oplontis under ash and pyroclastic flows. The event is known in detail from the letters of Pliny the Younger, who watched it from across the bay, and whose uncle — the naturalist Pliny the Elder — died during the rescue attempt at Stabiae; eruptions of this style are named after him. Vesuvius has erupted many times since, notably in 1631 and 1906, most recently in March 1944 during the Second World War. Since then it has been quiet, with only fumaroles steaming on the crater floor, but it is watched closely: some three million people live within reach of its slopes, in Ercolano, Torre del Greco and the eastern suburbs of Naples, making it one of the most dangerous volcanoes on Earth.
