About this place

The Matterhorn rises to 4,478 m on the border between Switzerland and Italy, above the resort of Zermatt to the north and the Aosta Valley to the south, in the Pennine Alps. Its form is the most recognisable in the range — a near-symmetrical pyramid whose four faces, aligned almost exactly with the cardinal points, meet at four ridges and a sharp summit, a shape cut by glaciers quarrying into the massif from every side. The first ascent, on 14 July 1865, ended in the most famous accident in mountaineering history: Edward Whymper's party reached the top by the Hörnli ridge, but on the descent a slip sent four of the seven climbers to their deaths on the north face. Three days later an Italian party led by Jean-Antoine Carrel gained the summit by the harder Italian ridge. Today the Hörnli ridge is still the normal route, the north face counts among the classic great north faces of the Alps, and the mountain's silhouette — Cervino in Italian, Mont Cervin in French — is one of the best-known symbols of Switzerland. Its name means "peak of the meadow", from the German Matte and Horn.

How to use

For hiking & outdoor

Use the 3D view to read ridgelines, relief and the overall shape of the terrain before a trip. It is a static elevation model for reference only; it is not live navigation, routing or safety guidance.

For 3D printing
